Bow Thruster Guide
Thrusters F.A.Q's
A Thruster makes boat handling, especially in tight
harbours, much eaiser by gently moving the Bow with a small independently driven
prop without having to use the main engine.
It depends on your expectations.

Yes, there are plenty of installers around. It may
cost a little extra and will involve hauling the boat and a few days of
installation.
Thrusters have very powerful electric motors and
it is recommended where possible to have a dedicated Battery close to the
Thruster with a separate charger. This saves the problems of installing
expensive, large cables from the main battery bank.
The majority of the work involves choosing the
location and installing the tunnel. A suitably qualified person should always
carry out this work.
Yes in most cases providing the tunnel has the same
internal diameter.
Performance Manoeuvring with Perfect Control
 |
TT Electric
For highly controlled manoeuvring in restricted situations Lewmar's TT
ELECTRIC Thrusters represent a move forward in design and function. Easy
installation and maintenance free operation are benefits that will attract
both builders and owners. A comprehensive program of testing has proved that
the new Lewmar Thrusters deliver efficient, balanced and supremely quiet
performance. |
|
 |
TT Hydraulic
A full range of hydraulic thrusters from 185 to 300 are available with all
the benefits of the standard range TT thrusters. The compact hydraulic
thrusters offer significant weight saving and extend motor running time.
Hydraulic versions need to be run from an external power source. |

 |
Ignition Protected
IP Thrusters are certified for use in Ignition Protected
areas designed for gas boats.
Ideal for wet areas such as Stern installations.
Covers can be supplied as a kit. This would only be offered as a
'waterproof' solution as the installation is the customer's
responsibility.

Custom Thruster
Custom tunnel thrusters are available for larger vessels and offer optimum
performance. |
|
 |
Vertical Retracting Tunnel Thruster (VRTT)
The VRTT offers exceptional performance by deeper immersion and minimised
drag by maintaining the hull’s shape upon retraction. |
|
 |
Swing Retracting Tunnel Thruster (SRTT)
The Swing Retracting thruster can be mounted further forward in a vessel
with a shallow forefoot or other internal space restrictions |
When you are using this guide consider the kind of
conditions that you will encounter, both wind and tide. It is better to have
a little in reserve, choosing a higher output Thruster may cost a little
extra but will give you a lot more piece of mind. The Recomendation is not
only based on complex windage calculations but years of experience in
supplying Thrusters to all types and construction of vessel.
Before making your selection you need to consider where the Thruster will be
installed. The closer to the Bow the better, lever effect but it must be
installed at least 1 times the diameter of the Thruster below the water
line. This is particularly important with the more powerful Thrusters where
they will try to suck the air down from the surface causing cavitation,
noise and loss of performance.
To simplify the choices two drop down menus are shown. We have combined
vessel type, displacement and sea conditions I.E. Light ( Light displacement
slender powerboat). Slight is wind condition Beaufort 4, 11-16 Knots, 5-8
M/S, Moderate breeze, Small waves growing longer with many white horses.
Then choose your boat length in ft or M.
