Eagle Fishfinder Tutorial
Transducer Guide for
fish finder
To select the transducer for fish finder that's best suited to your needs, you need to
consider the transducer's operating frequency, cone angle, and type of
installation.
Frequency
Most of the sonar units that we sell accessories for operate at 192 or 200
kHz. Some models use 50 kHz. A few are dual frequency capable, meaning they can
use both 50 and 200 kHz transducers for fish
finder. Typically, high frequency sonar units
provide the best resolution and definition of structure and targets. They excel
at showing minute details of the underwater world. 50 kHz units have much
greater depth penetration capability, but show less definition.
You must match the transducer's frequency to the sonar unit. For example, a
200 kHz sonar unit requires a 200 kHz transducer.
Cone Angle
A transducer's cone angle determines its coverage area of the underwater
world. The wider the cone angle, the greater the area that's covered. We offer a
variety of 200 kHz transducers for fish
finder with either a wide 20° (60° with high sensitivity
settings) or narrow 8° cone angle. The 50 kHz transducers come with a 35° cone
angle.
Generally, use a wide cone angle for fishing shallow to medium depths, the
narrow cone penetrates to deeper depths, but shows less fish and structure due
to its narrow beam.
The depth capability of your sonar units depends on its transmitter power,
receiver, sensitivity, frequency, transducer for
fish finder, and transducer installation. Other
things that effect depth capability are: water conditions and type, (all sonars
will show deeper depth readings in fresh water than salt) and bottom conditions.
Types of Transducer for
fish finder Installation
Most of our permanent-mount transducers for
fish finder are designed for high-speed
operations. For the best results, the transducer should be placed where a
smooth, undisturbed flow of water will pass across the face of the transducer at
all boat speeds. Read your transducer's owner's manual before installing the
transducer.
Transom Mount
The transom-mount transducer is the most popular, and it's generally the easiest
to install. The Skimmer® transducer for
fish finderdesign performs best when it is slightly
below the boat's hull. A plastic transducer is recommended on aluminum or
steel-hulled boats to avoid potential electrolysis problems.
Mounting the transducer for fish finder on the transom is recommended for outboard and
stern-drive (I/O) powered boats only. Transom mounting is ideal for high-speed
operation and models with the "kick-up" feature to prevent damage if the
transducer strikes an object.
Make certain that the chosen location doesn't interfere with the boat's
trailer. DO NOT mount the transducer for
fish finder directly behind the ribs, or thru-hull
fittings. Typically, on aluminum boats, mounting the transducer between two ribs
works best. On all hulls, mount the transducer at least one foot away from the
engine's lower unit. This helps to prevent air bubbles from the transducer
interfering with the propeller.
Periodically wash the bottom of the transducer for
fish finder with soap and water to remove
any oil film or growth that may collect. Oil and dirt reduce the transducer's
sensitivity and can even prevent its operation.
Shoot-Thru-Hull Mount
In this installation, the transducer for
fish finder is bonded to the inside of the hull with
epoxy. Ideally, the transducer is placed in the aft third of the hull close to
the centerline. The signal "shoots through" the hull with some loss of signal
strength. This installation must be made in an area of the hull that is made
from solid fiberglass, with no air bubbles or separated layers. If the hull is
of multi-layer or "sandwich" construction, you will have to remove the inner
layer of fiberglass and the wood or foam core to expose the outer layer of the
hull. This type of mount is recommended only with 192 or 200 kHz transducers.
Bolt-Thru-Hull Mount
In this type of installation, a hole is cut in the hull and the transducer is
mounted through the hull by means of a threaded shaft and nut. If the boat hull
has a dead rise higher than 10 degrees, fairing blocks made from wood or plastic
must be fabricated so that the transducer for
fish finder will mount in a completely vertical
position. The TH-FLW P5 does not require a fairing block.
On in-boards, the transducer must be installed ahead of the propeller(s),
shaft(s), and engine water intake(s).
If the boat's hull is made of steel or aluminum, use a plastic transducer for
fish finder to
prevent electrolysis problems.
Trolling Motor Mount
The PD-W "pod" transducer for fish
finder is designed for mounting on an electric trolling
motor. It has two slots for a hose clamp (which must be purchased separately).
Skimmer® transducers can also be mounted on a trolling motor using the TMB-S
trolling motor bracket. It's curved to fit the contour of most electric trolling
motors.

As a manufacturer we rely heavily on our dealers to sell
our products. We are not in the retail business and thus do not suggest or
set prices for our retailers. The retail price will be guided by the
specific market area you are in. You are encouraged to shop around before
purchasing a unit.
|
| How do I know
which fish finder unit to purchase? |
The two main factors in selecting a sonar product are
application and budget. We make units in all price ranges, and all are built
to the same exacting quality standards. The difference will be features,
screen size, screen resolution (number of pixels) and power. See the
Products section for more information.
|
| How do I know
if I need a dual-frequency or single-frequency model? |
Dual-frequency 50/200 kHz
fishfinders are specifically
designed for saltwater angling or tracking downriggers in the Great Lakes.
For superior inland and freshwater performance single-frequency 200 kHz
models are recommended.
|
| Which
transducer should I use? |
We currently produce two basic types of transducers for
fish finder.
- The wide cone angle (freshwater) transducer
is the standard transducer for fish
finder supplied with almost all products sold. This
transducer fits the needs of most of our customers.
- The narrow cone angle (saltwater) transducer has a more focused cone
angle and is designed to offer better performance at the maximum depths.
Refer to our
Transducer Selection Guide for more information.
NOTE: Maximum depth is determined by which model sonar is used and the power
output of that sonar.
|
| What's the difference
between 'Peak-toPeak' and 'RMS' when comparing the power of different units? |
'Peak-to-Peak' and 'RMS' are specifications used by
manufacturers in the marine industry to state the power ratings of sonar
units. These specifications are sometimes used to judge the effectiveness of
a sonar's useful range. Please review a short
sonar tutorial which will explain this and many more of the basic
principles of sonar.
|
| At shallow depths
(fresh or salt) does it matter if I have a 600 watt or 3,000 watt unit? |
For most fresh water fishing, in depths under 200 feet, a
600 watt unit will meet most fishermen's needs but higher power can help
show small targets better and eliminate "noise" on the screen. Since
saltwater is more dense, a higher output power is recommended for most
applications.
|
| Are all of your
sonar models capable of reading boat speed and water temperature? |
Most of our products are capable of reading speed and
temperature. However, please check the product information on our website or
check with a
local dealer for information concerning specific products.
|
|
Do you have a
side looking fish finder? |
The three-beam BroadView™ technology gives you an expansive
view of the underwater world. By telling you whether fish targets are in the
right, center or left sonar beam, TargetTrack™ gives you the additional
advantage of knowing on which side of the boat fish are located. This
feature also displays the precise depth of fish symbol targets for pinpoint
presentations. This feature is only available on selected models.
|
| I have an original
idea for a new product that I would like to discuss. |
Due to the legal liabilities involved in discussing new
products and their development, we are not actively seeking new inventions
or ideas.
|
| I have a
suggestion for a new feature or improving an existing product model. |
Research, development and design, is an ongoing process. We
are always interested in the needs of our customers and we really appreciate
your suggestions. You can always log onto our website for news about new
features, updates, and products.
