GPS or Global Positioning System
devices come in various form factors and support a wide range of features
depending on their target audience.
Based on a system which was built by the US Department of Defence and relies
on 24 satellites orbiting the earth, the
GPS system allows its users to accurately determine where they are on
the planet. Given that it is based on receiving satellite signals the
quality of a GPS receiver can make
all the difference in the world.
We have broken our GPS review
section down into the following major sections
Marine GPS: These are
GPS systems capable of being
installed on marine vessels.
Car GPS:
GPS built to help drivers navigate.
Handheld GPS: GPS units which are highly portable and used by typically
anyone who needs to know where they are or how to get to where they want to

When selecting a portable handheld unit, consider the variety of situations in
which you could use it. Don't overlook the fact that the same
GPS receiver used off-road can also be
used when walking in strange towns, hiking, bicycling, boating, or marking
landmarks like gas stations or restaurants on long road trips.
1) Magellan GPS Roadmate 8000
Vehicle GPS Navigation System
The integrated rechargeable battery allows you to listen to your favorite
MP3s and view your photos away from home even when you don't have access to
power. Enter multiple points of destination including city centers, street
addresses, intersections and Multi-destination Route Optimization will
calculate the quickest way. Features: MP3/WMA storage and playback; digital
photo storage and viewer; digital media card slot (or Smart Digital Card or

GPS Navigation System
An internal lithium-ion battery (4- to 8-hour life) allows out-of-vehicle
trip planning. Preprogrammed with 320 detailed maps of the U.S., Canada and
Puerto Rico—MapSource City Select database features 6 million points of
interest. Includes software for downloading specific maps or areas of
interest onto the 128 MB SD memory card—simply transfer from a PC via USB
connection 3.5" diagonal, 16 bit color display with simple touchscreen
interface
3) Cobra GPS Handheld Navigator
Simply load the StreetFinder software into your computer. Then load the
destination states for each trip into Navigator using the PC interface
cable. Finally, punch in the place you want to reach and follow the map
directions on the Navigator's screen. Includes continental U.S. state
boundaries, highways, Canadian provincial boundaries, European country
boundaries and hundreds of worldwide cities. WAAS Enabled GPS receiver is
more accurate than standard GPS receivers.
4) TomTom GO 700 Portable GPS
Navigation System
Make & receive hands-free calls through your Go 700 via built-in Bluetooth
connection (with your compatible cellphone) -- it routes calls through the
powerful built-in speaker & microphone while the screen continues to display
your route. Just plug in, switch on and go -- no installation or activation
necessary. 3.5" color touchscreen with anti-glare coating. Smart Digital
(SD) card is preloaded with maps of 48 contiguous United States. CD-ROM maps
of Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Puerto Rico & Guam.
5) Lowrance GlobalMap 100 GPS
It's made totally waterproof, reliably rugged, and with second-to-none
12-parallel channel position accuracy even under the toughest conditions you
or Mother Nature can dish out.
6) Garmin GPS StreetPilot 7500 GPS
Portable Navigation System
Includes wireless remote that allows operation from a distance. Huge 7"
easy-to-read touchscreen is ideal if you drive a larger vehicle such as an
SUV, RV or Semi -- see where you're going from anywhere in the vehicle!
Includes built-in MP3 & audio book players for entertainment options. Loaded
with maps of the entire U.S. plus major Canadian metropolitan areas.
Features a built-in antenna, built-in WAAS-enabled
GPS receiver, XM Satellite radio and
XM NavTraffic capable (subscription required).
7) Garmin GPS Etrex Hand Held GPS
Unit
the eTrex takes the best features of a 12 parallel channel
Garmin GPS receiver and put them
into a 6-ounce package that is only 4" high and 2" wide. The result is a
unit that will literally fit in the palm of your hand. Besides its small
size, outdoorsmen will notice its sleek design. All buttons are located on
either side of the unit, allowing for simple, one-handed operation that
won't obstruct your view of the display. There are only 5 operator buttons
for the ultimate in user-friendly design.
A top-of-the line GPS receiver that
has excellent mapping capabilities, although it lacks memory for storing
additional downloaded maps. While portable, it's better suited to drivers
than hikers.
The Garmin eTrex Vista is the most feature-packed version of the eTrex line.
The Vista model certainly lives up to its reputation, as there are far too
many "pros" to list here, and relatively few "cons". The
Garmin GPS eTrex Vista is the best
in its class, offering the most convenience features than any other
GPS receiver in this price range.
