Standard Horizon Radio Guide

STANDARD HORIZON leads the world's marine communications markets

Marine products require high reliability and functionality because ships must be operated safely even under severe weather conditions. The nature of marine communications is changing, such as the increased need for satellite-based location positioning systems and the adoption of GMDSS by certain countries. Because of this changing environment, we offer a wide spectrum of products. We are the leaders in communication equipment covering the HF to VHF frequency, the most important frequencies in marine communications. We also offer products for use in marine leisure activities such as for yachts and powerboats.

Our products are used in the fishing and shipping industries as well as installed in the base stations. We will continue to provide highly reliable products employing the latest in technology to the various market segments. In the area of professional use marine communications, we have received high praise from various countries for providing total solutions to government agencies such as the Coast Guard. We are constantly developing and releasing innovative new products such as the fully waterproof portable transceiver and a multi function remote access microphone making it possible to operate a unit from a microphone.

Eclipse FAQ

When I plug in an external speaker does the front panel speaker turn off?

The design of the Eclipse+ does not allow the use of more than one speaker because the internal audio amplifier is only capable of driving one 4 Ohm speaker. So when an external speaker is plugged in the front panel speaker will be turned off.

What connector is used for the external audio speaker?

It is a Standard RCA phono plug. This connector is exactly the same connector used on a VCR.

When I press the scan key the radio does not scan.

The Eclipse+ will scan but the user must program the radio to scan. To program or select the channels to scan, go to the channel using the up or down keys and press and hold the SCAN key until the radio's LCD shows MEM. This means the channels are programmed into the scan memory. Repeat this procedure for all the channels that are to be scanned. Next adjust the squelch control to the point where the noise stops, press the scan key and the radio is scanning and will stop at a channel when a transmission is received. To remove a channel from memory, select the channel press and hold the SCAN key until MEM is removed from the LCD.

Is there a flush mount kit available for this radio?

This radio can be flush mounted using the optional CMB16 flush mount kit available through any Standard Horizon dealer or our parts department at (714)827-7600.

My radio display blinks every time I transmit on high power.

Possible antenna problem or antenna maybe mounted too close to the VHF.

Temporarily connect the radio to another VHF antenna that is working properly to verify the problem.

If the radio is not operating, send the radio to the STANDARD HORIZON repair department: 10900 Walker Street Cypress, CA 90630 Phone: 800/366-4566.

If the radio is working properly make sure antenna connector is soldered properly and is not corroded. Also check the fiberglass of the antenna to ensure there are no cracks that could of allowed water to get inside.

How do I check to make sure my MMSI has been entered correctly?

It is possible to view your MMSI number to make sure it is programmed correctly. Press and hold the CALL SET key to activate the setup menu. Scroll down and select USER MMSI by pressing the CALL SET key, check to see if the MMSI is correct. At this point do not attempt to change the numbers unless they are not correct, doing so will count as a second attempt at user MMSI input. To exit, press the 16/9 key.

What should I do if I get the message "error too many entries press the CALL/SET key"?

If you attempt to enter the MMSI more than 2 times the unit will not allow you to enter your MMSI number. This is a factory setting to prevent misuse of unauthorized MMSI numbers. To reset the unit you must send it in to the factory service center: Standard Horizon Attention Marine Repairs 10900 Walker Street Cypress, CA 90630

The party that I am transmitting to advises that my voice is weak.

The QUEST speaker microphone has Noise Canceling trade name (clear Voice). This mic works by canceling the noise so it is very important the when using the mic to speak directly into the hole located on the lower front part of the mic with your mouth about 1 inch away.

 What is DSC all about?

Digital Selective Calling (DSC)

DSC is a semi-automated method of establishing a radio call, it has been designated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an international standard for establishing VHF, MF and HF radio calls. It had also been designated as part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). It is planned that DSC will eventually replace aural watches on distress frequencies and will be used to announce routine and urgent maritime safety information broadcasts.

This new system will allow mariners to instantly send a distress call with GPS position (when connected to the transceiver) to the US Coast Guard and other vessels within range of the transmission. DSC will also allow mariners to initiate or receive distress, Urgency, Safety routine, POS Request, POS Send and Group calls to or from another vessel equipped with a DSC transceiver.

USCG DSC Watch

The USCG has plans to upgrade its VHF National Distress System (expected by 2005), so at the time of printing only larger vessels that are required to carry VHF DSC radios, other boater with VHF DSC radios and most towing companies will be able to hear your distress transmission

Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI)

What is an MMSI?

An MMSI is a nine digit number used on Marine Transceiver capable of using Digital Selective Calling (DSC). This number is used like a telephone number to selectively call other vessels.

How can I obtain an MMSI assignment?

Boat US is offering MMSI free MMSI numbers. Visit the following to register: http://www.boatus.com/mmsi/.

Distress Call

Transmits a DSC Distress message to all radios equipped to receive a DSC Distress call. Some Standard Horizon radios may be connected to a GPS to also transmit the Latitude, Longitude of the vessel.

Individual Call

This feature allows the user to contact another vessel capable of using DSC and automatically switch the radio to a desired working channel. This feature is similar to calling a desired vessel on CH16 and requesting them to go to another channel.

Urgency Call

This call should be used when a vessel may not be truly in distress, but have a potential problem that might lead to a distress situation.

Safety Call

Used to transmit boating safety information to other vessels. This message usually contains information about an overdue boat, a derelict afloat, loss of a navigation aid or an important meteorological message.

POSITION REQUEST

Advancements in DSC have made it possible to poll the location of another vessel and show the position of that vessel on the display some Standard Horizon VHF's. Standard Horizon has taken this feature one step further, if any Standard Horizon GPS is connected a Standard Horizon VHF with this function the polled position of the vessel is shown on the display of the GPS chart plotter making it easy to navigate to the location of the polled vessel. This is a great feature for anyone wanting to know the position of anther vessel for example you buddy that is catching fish, or finding the location of a person you are cruising with.

POSITION SEND

The feature is similar to Position Request, however instead of requesting a position of another vessel this function allows you to send you position to another vessel. Your vessel must have an operating GPS receiver connected  the a Compatible Standard Horizon VHF to send the position

When other vessel receives your position, the transceiver outputs the position to aany Standard Horizon GPS chart plotter to show your position on the receiving transceiver.

CALL WAITING DIRECTORY

The DSC Call Waiting directory logs received distress individual calls that are received and not answered within 5 minutes or while the radio is set on the DSC Standby function. Calls will be logged while busy with other communications as long as the transmitter is not keyed at the time of the call. If the call is answered within 5 minutes the call will not be logged. When a call is logged, a message will appear on the LCD.

ADDITIONAL DIGITAL SELECTIVE CALLING INFORMATION

For additional information the USCG has an excellent site that should be visited at www.navcen.uscg.mil/marcoms/gmdss/dsc.html.

What IS JIS7 submersible rating mean?

JIS stands for Japanese Industrial Standards. Level 7 is a submersible rating. The QUEST can withstand being submersed for 30 minutes. We all know that if this actually happens, you have bigger problems than your VHF, but the main jest of this test is to make sure the radio can withstand being mounted on a VERY wet boat.

Is there a flush mount kit available for this radio?

This radio can be flush mounted using the optional CMB16 flush mount kit available through any of our Standard Horizon dealer or parts department at (714)527-1716.

Intrepid FAQ

My radio turns off every time I transmit on high power.

First have the antenna tested for a high SWR, or temporarily connect the radio to another VHF antenna that is working properly to verify the problem. If the antenna is working properly make sure the unit is connected directly to a solid 12V source, or connect directly to the ships 12V battery.

How do I check to make sure my MMSI has been entered correctly?

It is possible to view your MMSI number to make sure it is programmed correctly. Press and hold the CALL SET key to activate the setup menu. Scroll down and select USER MMSI by pressing the CALL SET key.  What IS JIS7 submersible rating mean?

JIS stands for Japanese Industrial Standards. Level 7 is a submersible rating. The INTREPID+ can withstand being submersed for 30 minutes. We all know that if this actually happens, you have bigger problems than your VHF, but the main jest of this test is to make sure the radio can withstand being mounted on a VERY wet boat.

I push the "SCAN" key and the channels do not change like other radios that I have had previously.

The scanning mode on the INTREPID+ is a little different from previous VHF models. After you have finished programming in all the channels you would like to scan, and you press the scan button you will see "MEMSCAN" indication on the LCD of the radio. "MEMSCAN" indicates the radio is scanning the programmed channels; the channel number on the LCD indicates last channel that the radio received a transmission on. The reason for this change is to quickly see the last channel a transmission was made on. You can verify that the channels are programmed in to the scan memory by pressing the MEM button then immediately scroll through the channels using the channel selector knob to scroll through the programmed channels

I cannot control the volume of the external audio speaker when the RAM mic is plugged in.

When an external audio speaker is connected and the RAM mic is plugged in the audio control of the external speaker is controlled by the RAM mic. If the RAM mic is unplugged the audio of the external speaker is controlled by the main radio.

I press the MEM button to program a channel in memory but it doesn't take it.

If you press and hold the MEM button nothing will happen. All you need to do is simply tap the button to program a channel into memory.

How do I connect an external audio speaker?

External audio speakers are wired to the Radio using the Yellow and White wires coming out of the accessory cable on the radio. If your external audio speaker has a connector on the end of it simply cut it off and strip back the wires and and hard wire to the yellow and white on the radio. White is the speaker + wire, yellow is the speaker - wire.

What kind of PA horn can I use with my SPECTRUM+?

Any 4 ohm 20 watt or larger hailer horn will work with the SPECTRUM+ VHF hailer. The hailer horn is connected to the RED+ and black- on the accessory cable provided with the unit. Standard Horizon offer two horns model number 220SW and 240SW, which are available at any Standard Horizon dealer, or through our parts dept at (562) 404-2700 ext 351.

In the FOG mode it only sounds the fog horn once.

There are four different fog signals. When activated the fog signals will repeat every two minutes.

What is the NMEA output on the SPECTRUM+ for?

The SPECTRUM+ will output the NMEA DSC sentence. When the unit is interfaced with a Standard Horizon chart plotter or any plotter that will accept the NMEA DSC sentence and a distress call is received that DSC information it is relayed to the chart plotter and the distress call is charted on the screen of the chart plotter.

Is there a flush mount kit available for this radio?

This radio can be flush mounted using the optional CMB16 flush mount kit available through our parts department at (562) 404-2700.

When I turn the radio on, the backlight comes on but there is no display.

The radio operates between 11-16VDC. If the voltage is too low the backlight will light up but the radio will not turn on. Check voltage at the unit, or connect the radio directly to a 12V battery.
