How Xtreme Heaters Work

Xtreme Engine Compartment Heaters are designed specifically to keep your engine space safely above freezing temperature, without wasting energy heating the space to unnecessary levels.  Our fixed thermostat is factory-set to turn on the Xtreme Heater at 40° Fahrenheit (+/-3°) and off at 50°F, keeping your bilge space safely in the high 30’s to mid 40’s despite below freezing temperatures outside.

Consider the following illustration of an actual 74 hour log taken from a boat stored in a wet slip, using an Xtreme Heater.  The top red line represents a sensor that was placed near the Xtreme Heater, and the 2nd Green line is a sensor that was placed away from the heater.  The purple line, labeled outside air, recorded the temperature outside of the boat.

74 hour log

As you can see from this illustration, outside air temperatures and engine compartment temperatures fell on a similar curve, until they approach the Xtreme Zone of Protection.  Once the Xtreme Heater is triggered, the engine compartment is maintained at a relatively consistent level.  Toward the end of the series, you’ll note that as the outside air temperature rises back above freezing, the engine compartment temperature remains consistent as the Xtreme Heater has sensed that it is no longer needed to keep the engine compartment above freezing

Benefits and Advantages of the Xtreme Heater

number 1

Easy Installation

The Xtreme Heater is unique in that it is a smaller unit than others on the market, making the installation even easier.  Larger outdated heaters are restrictive as they can't fit in preferred mounting locations.

xtreme heater fits in any small space

The Xtreme Heater can fit in the best location to suit your boat engine compartment.

number 2

Flexible Mounting

The Xtreme Heater can be mounted at ANY angle (upside down, sideways, etc). Only Xtreme with its superior design can accomodate your engine compartment's specific dimensions.

number 3

Efficient

Our heating element is designed using the latest technology so it is smaller and more efficient than other products on the market.

number 4

Fast Acting

It begins running at operating temperature almost immediately after it powers on and cools in a very short period of time.

number 5

Increases Battery Life

The Xtreme Heater not only protects your motor, it will also help increase your battery life and provide more cold cranking power during the winter months.

Cold temperatures dramatically reduce the effectiveness of chemical reactions within the battery, while increasing the battery's internal resistance. Both of these cause a reduction in cranking power as temperatures drop.

The Xtreme Heater not only protects your motor, it will also help increase your battery life and provide more cold cranking power during the winter months.

Specifications and Technical Information

Key Features of the Xtreme Heater:

true forced air

True Forced Air Heating circulates air more effectively and heats more evenly for more accurate climate control.  Other “radiator” style heaters rely on convection, leaving cold areas in the engine compartment.  Forced air assures a more accurate and consistent temperature in the entire engine compartment.

automatic thermostat

Automatic Thermostat turns the heater on at 40°F and off at 55°F +/-3°, which is the tightest tolerance on any bilge heater on the market. Other heaters have a 5° tolerance in their thermostats, which can result in a inaccurate reading and inconsistent temperature control.

heater will not overheat

Failsafe Design cannot overheat. The temperature-limiting characteristics of our heating technology is dynamic and self regulating.  Other heaters have no way of limiting their temperature, should something go wrong.  Read more about how PTC works.

high efficiency

High Efficiency your wallet will appreciate.  Xtreme produces heat faster, circulates more air and shuts off earlier.  Less run-time, means less money out of your pocket.

prewired

Pre-wired 20ft marine rated power cord with 110V 3 prong plug eases installation.

quick release bracket

Quick Release Bracket works with all Xtreme heaters for easy removal and re-install of the heater.

maximum life

Maximum Life - Every component has been selected with superior MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) ratings to enhance durability and reliability in the marine environment.

warranty 2 year

Full 2 Year Warranty and lifetime support for service Our heaters have proven so dependable, we’re increasing our warranty period to reflect our superior reliability

complete protection

Complete Protection: Fully anodized inside and out for superior protection from the harsh marine environment. While other heaters only have some parts protected, we anodize everything.

small footprint

Small Footprint: Makes installation easy in almost any size or type of boat, increases options for mounting in any boat, for better access in tight engine compartments.

Choose the Right Heater for you

Three Sizes = Flexibility

Xtreme Heaters come in three sizes, Small (300 Watt), Medium (450 Watts) and Large (600 Watts).  Three sizes mean the ultimate in flexibility.  Multiple Xtreme Heaters can be combined to protect larger spaces, tighter engine compartments with poor circulation, or to protect other areas of the boat, such as cabin spaces.

compass

» Small (300 Watt) Xtreme Heater

Generally speaking, the small size heater works best for small boats, with tight engine compartments, such as ski/wake boats, runabouts and deck boats up to about 21 feet in length.  With a footprint of just 6" x 4" x 5 1/8", it is the most compact version of our heaters, designed to fit in spaces that other heaters simply will not.

» Medium (450 Watt) Xtreme Heater

Our medium Heater can handle larger engine compartments typically found on runabout boats, to smaller “pocket” cruisers, up to about 26’ in length, or can be selected for extra protection on smaller boats in colder climates.

» Large (600 Watt) Xtreme Heater

The Large Xtreme Heater is suggested for larger cruisers, or any boat with multiple engines, large engine compartments, or more equipment to protect, such as fresh water systems, strainers, generators, etc.  Some larger boats, such as houseboats or cruisers, with wide beams, may require two heaters for complete protection.

Guide to the Right Heater for you

Choosing the right Xtreme heater, or heaters, for your vessel depends on a number of factors that are local and specific to the type of boat that you have. To select your heater, start with these general guidelines, and factor in what you know about your local weather conditions, where you store your boat and how much protection you are looking for. Some of our customers are looking to extend their season, while others would rather avoid winterizing altogether.

engine compartment size

Your engine compartment.

How big is it? What does it contain?

Volume of space to be heated

How big is your engine compartment? A typical width x height x depth calculation will give you a starting point. If your engine space is openly connected to other parts of your boat, rather than separated by bulkheads (walls) that space must also be considered as the heat generated by your Xtreme Heater will be shared with any connected spaces.  Use this handy compartment calculator to figure out the rough volume you are trying to protect.  While we make no specific recommendations based on volume, it's a good starting point and consideration when choosing the right Xtreme Heater, as logically, larger areas will require higher heating capacity.

Amount of equipment being protected

What's in your engine room? In smaller boats, most likely you are protecting a single engine and one or two batteries. On larger cruisers, multiple engines, a generator, plumbing systems, air conditioning and water heaters may form part of the equation. The more equipment there is to protect, and the more cluttered an engine space is, the more challenging it is to circulate the warm air produced by your Xtreme heater. In some cases, it is better to install two smaller heaters rather than a single large heater for this reason.

Conditions

How cold does it get where your boat lives, and how long does it stay below freezing? Is your boat stored on land, on a lift, or in the water? How cold does the water get?

Disclaimer:

These guidelines for heater selection are intended to help you make an informed choice regarding the size, number and placement of your Xtreme Engine Compartment Heater(s).  The infinite number of variables involved, including boat and engine compartment configuration, storage location, local weather conditions or extreme weather events make it impossible for us to make definitive recommendations for specific boats in specific locations.
