PRODUCT INFO
For Radomes
Our Self-Levelling Radar Mount range ensures your radar stays level with the
horizon at all times for optimum antenna performance.

Our Backstay mounted version positions your radar away from any interference,

Features:
Hydraulic Damping
The main levelling unit features a fine turned damping system which reacts to
major changes in heel angle of the boat. It is entirely maintenance free and no
power is required

FAQs
Can this product be installed on boats with a split backstay or runners?
Option 1:
If backstay split length is less than 2.7m (8’10”) above the deck, you can
mount the system centrally and attach head unit onto the central cable above
split. Pole extensions available to raise antenna higher.
This is not really satisfactory in most cases because it will obstruct aft
access to the bathing platform.
Option 2:
If backstay split length is over 2.7m (8’10”) above the deck, you can install
the mounting pole and head unit parallel to lower backstay.
If the leveller pole is to be installed parallel to one of the ‘splits’, in
most cases it will be difficult to correctly orientate the assembly (i.e. with
radar and swing axis of leveller parallel with yacht’s centreline) using the
supplied pole base bracket.
For a satisfactory install, a custom ‘wedge’ must be fabricated to go between
the pole base bracket and deck. Another identical wedge will be required on the
underside of the deck or transom to provide a perpendicular face for the nuts
and washers. The wedges can be planed to the correct angle from a block of
hardwood (teak or mahogany or similar). They need to be independently fixed to
the deck with fasteners spaced differently to the pole base bracket, to stop it
from squeezing out under compression.
'Split Backstay Fitting Kit’ available soon…….
This installation requires reasonable backstay tension. If you are likely to
completely slacken off the stay during sailing, we recommend installing an
alternative Scanstrut product (dedicated stern pole or mast mount).
How will the pole base bracket fit to my backstay chainplate?
You will have to drill and tap the chainplate to accept the 2 x M8 fixings
that are supplied with the base fitting.
I am worried about my bimini conflicting with leveller installation.
The best thing to do is to check the technical information. This will show
the clearance that you require fore of your backstay when installing the
product.
My Raymarine dome does not sit level with the boat is at rest – why is this?
Do not worry, your leveller is still working. The dome’s centre of gravity is
off centre resulting in a slight ‘list’ to one side.
Since we became aware of this issue we have offset the holes on the mounting
plate and so the dome will now sit level. The new plate is available to purchase
should you require it, please contact the Scanstrut sales team.
I have a hydraulic backstay adjuster – will I still be able to install the
product?
The product is supplied with backstay bushings which clamp around the
backstay. These mean that you can still adjust the tension of your backstay
without the Self Levelling product getting in the way.
The maximum diameter for backstay adjuster unit is Ø60mm.
My backstay wire is ø6mm, do you do a head unit bush to accommodate this?
Nylon bushes are supplied for backstays from 7mm (0.2”) up to 14mm (0.6”).
You will be able to use the 7mm bush for your 6mm dia. Backstay.
Is the Self Levelling Radar Mount suitable for choppy seas or racing
conditions?
YES – The structural strength is exceptional in this product. Our design team
completed a shock test on sailor Alex Bennett's boat.
If I am using the backstay as an antenna for my HF radio, will installing
the Self Levelling Backstay Mount interfere with this?
The kit is supplied with a nylon bush which fits around the backstay before
you clamp the levelling head unit to avoid any metallic connection.
Just ensure that you do not fit the pole base onto the backstay chainplate.
