Ethernet

An address based data packet network capable of high speeds (10/100/1,000Mbs) originally developed for the computer industry that is seeing adoption in the marine industry. Ethernet networks are designed as a star topology. Systems of three or more nodes require a hub, router or switch to facilitate all point to point connections. An NMEA standard for the transfer of NMEA 2000 messages using an Ethernet protocol is being developed that will be called OneNet.

Cable System

There are numerous cabling systems for Ethernet but the ones applicable to Raymarine installations include:

 RJ45    SeaTalk hs    RayNet

 Wifi

Cat5 w/ RJ45   SeaTalkHS   RayNet   WiFi
The standard cable/connector of the computer industry that is very low cost but alternatives such as SeaTalkHS and RayNet are preferred connectors in the marine environment.

Raymarine’s first generation Ethernet connector which consisted of putting a waterproof collar around an RJ45 connector.

Explore SeaTalkHS

Raymarine’s current generation system that replaces the RJ45 connector with a waterproof vibration tolerant twist pin connector that is designed for the marine environment.   A wireless system that doesn’t use any wires that provides for low cost flexible installations but are not as robust as wired systems. WiFi is ideal for non-mission critical accessory connections.

Available cables:

RayNet to RayNet Cables

The new RayNet (F) to RayNet (F) network cable can be used to daisy-chain 2 adjacent RayNet devices together. It is also useful for joining two adjacent HS-5 Network Switches together on larger systems where multiple switches are necessary. This network cable is 15-inches (400mm) long.

This cable joins our existing line of RayNet interconnect cables available in 400mm, 2, 5, 10 or 20 metre lengths.

NMEA 2000 / SeaTalkng

The current marine industry standard. All current Raymarine MFDs are NMEA2000 certified. The standard utilises the CAN (Control Area Network) design developed by Bosch for the automotive market but with messages/sentence appropriate for the marine industry.

A multi-talker, multi-listener approach using serial data at moderate date rates (250kbs).

Cable System

Under the NMEA standard, manufacturers can use the cable/connector design of their choice so long as it conforms to certain requirements. The topology is a robust terminated backbone/spur design.

 SeaTalk ng    SeaTalkng

Raymarine’s proprietary cable system for use in NMEA 2000 networks. The design provides two advantages. First, the connector collars are retained on the product which allows for a smaller cable diameter making installations easier. More importantly, the cable can include a sixth wire which allows for backward compatibility with SeaTalk1 equipment. Products with SeaTalkng connectors can be used on NMEA 2000 networks that use Devicenet cabling through simple connector adaptors and conversely equipment with Devicenet connectors can be used on NMEA 2000 networks that use SeaTalkng cabling through simple connector adaptors.

Available cables:

Backbone Cables

In a SeaTalkng installation, a backbone cable runs through the length of the boat.

Individual devices connect to the backbone by spur cables that run to T-pieces on the backbone. The backbone carries both data and power to attached devices. The backbone should be sized so that it will run past every location where an NG or NMEA 2000 device might be installed.

Two backbone cable lengths can be joined together by part A06030, a backbone extender.

SeaTalk / SeaTalk1

SeaTalk / SeaTalk1

Raymarine’s proprietary network design released at the same time as NMEA0183 that had several key advantages. SeaTalk1 is included in many Raymarine MFDs and instruments to provide legacy support but now NMEA 2000 offers several advantages over SeaTalk1.

Data

A multi-talker, multi-listener approach using serial data at low data rates (4.8Kbps).

Cable System

The network used proprietary cables and connectors that were designed for the marine environment. The connectors are three pin moulded and incorporate 1/8” automotive spades as mating elements. The network could be implemented as either a simple daisy chain structure or the more robust approaches of backbone/spur or star design.

NMEA 0183

NMEA 0183

The first industry standard marine network specification released over 20 years ago. While still frequently used by VHF radios, most other applications have migrated to NMEA 2000.

Data

A single-talker, multi-listener approach using serial data at low data rates (initially 4.8Kbps now up to 38Kbps). Message formats are standardised to provide cross-vendor interoperability.

Cable System

Uses a daisy chain architecture but there is no standard for cables or connectors. The daisy chain design is low cost and simple but it is susceptible to having a single point of failure taking down the network. Most implementations of NMEA 0183 use terminal block connections which are simple to install but failure prone in a marine environment.

Important Radar Information

Radar with Multifunction Display

Safe Emissions

Powerful enough to slice through atmospheric clutter, Raymarine radars still comfortably meet international limits for energy absorption - in fact, the energy absorbed from an ordinary mobile phone can be several times greater than that from a correctly installed Raymarine radar.

Installation

All radars work on line-of-sight principles so although antennas could theoretically be fitted almost anywhere, unobstructed and parallel to the water line is better.

Radome Radar on Buster

Radar screen with mfd

Interference Resistance

Raymarine's radars use interference rejection technology to resist signal interference from other vessels' transmissions as well as close proximity objects already fitted to the boat.

Pulsed magnetron vs broadband (FMCW) radar technology

Broadband (FMC) radars typically emit low levels of energy, resulting in loss of ultimate performance in conditions of fog, rain, spray and snow, and limiting target detection at longer ranges.

Raymarine pulsed magnetron radars combine low average energy with high peak powers allowing the radar to detect targets at greater ranges, and to punch through adverse weather conditions ensuring targets are identified.

Raymarine radar - What's the difference?

Raymarine Digital radar image

Digital radar

Offers 4kW capability for improved performance and uses digital processing for increased target definition. Digital reduces the cable size (compared to analog) and makes an easier interface to larger systems. Lower power consumption and costs less than a full HD Digital system.

HD Color radar

Raymarine's HD Color radar utlizes powerful signal processing technologies that help: distinguish between target types, automatically detect weak and distant contacts, and virtually eliminate clutter and noise. The truly adaptive transmitter and receiver automatically adjusts to changing environmental and sea conditions. HD Color radar delivers a dramatically clearer radar picture with crisp, well-defined contact echoes and a life-like target presentation.

Super HD Radar screen

Super HD Color radar

Super HD Color radar is a giant leap forward in marine radar. Using highly advanced digital signal processing, Super HD Color radar has much greater dynamic range than conventional radar enabling the digital receiver to acquire and process vast amounts of echo information that is normally lost by conventional analog radar systems. Super HD Color technology intelligently isolates and identifies true radar targets, while simultaneously eliminating unwanted clutter. The extra-narrow beam width, pinpoints targets with stunning clarity. The result is a dramatically clearer radar display.

Raymarine radar delivers unmatched performance and ease-of-use

Raymarine's HD Color technology brings radar users the power of digital signal processing with a truly adaptive transmitter and receiver that automatically adjusts to changing environmental and sea conditions.

Raymarine weather advantage

Weather advantage

Raymarine's HD Color scanners provide superior all weather performance allowing you to still see targets through rain and thunderstorms. Use radar to track weather too.

During this abnormally heavy rain storm (see left hand image), rain mode was used to cut the clutter to clearly reveal the targets (see right hand image).

Cut the clutter

Detect targets at very close proximity to your vessel, or at very long ranges to see distant vessels, land features and even weather fronts. Distinguish targets through even the heaviest rain clutter.

Use the radar to see the weather coming, then use the radar overlay to map the weather pattern onto the chart.

  Raymarine weather advantage

Track Targets

Not everything transmits AIS!

Using MARPA* (mini-automatic radar plotting aid) allows you to identify vessel, speed, bearing, closest point of approach (CPA) and time to closest point of approach (TCPA), dangerous/proximity alarms, overlay AIS info for further target clarification.

*For the best radar overlay and MARPA performance fit a smart heading sensor or an SPX autopilot course computer.

Track Targets 1    Target (1) has been aquired (red circle overlay) using MARPA and is being tracked by your radar. Speed and bearing of the target are shown and the target's heading is shown as a thin red line at 65ş (2).

Track Targets 2    The tracked target has now moved into the previously set guard zone around your vessel and has triggered the dangerous target alarm, seen on screen, and set off an audible alarm

Raymarine SeaTalkhs Connections

SeaTalkHS diagram with HS5

SeaTalkhs Plug and Play

By using SeaTalkhs networking, you can instantly transfer radar, chartplotter, fishfinder, thermal imaging and navigation functions. Configuring your system is a simple as determining which SeaTalkhs devices you'd like to have (chart, radar, sonar, video) and where you would like to see them.

Networking two devices

The most basic system may consist of a C Series Widescreen or an E Series Widescreen with a DSM30, DSM300 or a radar.

Using a SeaTalkhs Crossover coupler, they can be quickly and easily connected together. Because the components are all auto sensing, there is no complicated setup required. Simply plug them in.

If you're not using a DSM, you can link any two E Series Widescreen displays with the crossover coupler too.

HS-5 SeaTalk HS Network Switch

Multistation Networking - New HS-5 SeaTalkhs Network Switch

SeaTalkhs data is quickly distributed to other SeaTalkhs using the HS-5 Network Switch.

The switch has 5 ports - 4 RayNet ports supporting 10 or 100 Mbit/sec network speeds and a 5th gigabit port allowing a higher speed across switches, should a 2nd switch be necessary.

When networking three to eight SeaTalkhs devices, the SeaTalkhs Network Switch can be used.

The auto sensing SeaTalkhs components make setup a breeze, simply plug them in. SeaTalkhs does the rest.
